A Non-farming Farm Day

I’m not farming today. Or at least not much. I was out bright and early, which is not quite accurate since it’s not bright out early this time of year, to let the birds out. The rooster was very well mannered this morning. I’m sure it has everything to do with me whacking him with a tomato stake after he flew at me three freaking times in a row yesterday. I hoped he’d think (as though chickens think like people think) that if he wasn’t good I’d stuff him in a grain bag and make him disappear like the other rooster disappeared earlier this week. My arm was thinking “one good blow to the head…” and the little voice of reason that hangs out in the back of my brain was yelling “don’t bruise the meat!” The don’t-waste-resources side of me wants to put him to good use by eating him. If he bothers anyone again the common-sense side will turn him into compost bin material. I’m the only person subjected to him right now. If anyone else were going to be out there he would already be covered with pine shavings and dead plants.

As I said, I’m not farming today. When I finish here I’ll close the birds in for the night, bring in firewood and call it a day. So what did I do while not farming? I called Dad yesterday and invited him to meet me in Lee for breakfast. He’s at camp with the guys for hunting week. He doesn’t have his truck so rather than him borrow someone’s I drove in to camp to pick him up. I can’t remember the last time I had time alone with my father. It was great. I saw an old family friend who now lives in VA. I didn’t know he’d driven up for the week. It was a nice surprise.

I took care of some town business Steve can’t get to during the day since he works a real job.

I’ve puttered.

Steaks and fresh salad for supper. I’ll cut the salad greens after I close in the birds. Back to farming tomorrow.
