On the Road

I’m on the road tomorrow to Greaney’s Turkey Farm. First thing in the morning we’ll load two pens with chickens and one kennel with two turkeys. Scott called back quickly and fit me in after Paula’s chickens are done. I’ll meet her in the morning. The appointment is at 1:30 p.m. It’ll be a long day by the time we drive four hours over, wait for the birds and four hours back. Our Steves will be home building (hers) and stacking firewood (mine). I cleaned out the old rabbitry today so that firewood can be stacked in there.

I made mincemeat today. I think I’m going to like it. I used venison, apples, raisins, a little more than half the sugar called for in the recipe, cinnamon, nutmeg, suet, vinegar and molasses. Sounds awful doesn’t it? It looks that bad too. I’ll post pics next week.

Next week starts off with a visit from my sister. We’ll go into Calais for a few things before Thanksgiving. I need flour at Nature’s Pantry. I never get out of a health food store with only one thing. I’ll move the pullets to the barn and let them get themselves established before the older chickens are moved. I’m going to leave the turkeys in the hen house for a while. When it gets very cold or there’s a foot of snow they’ll come up to the barn for the winter too. It’s my way of being lazy. I won’t have to carry water as far.

Tuesday’s cleaning day. Wednesday is dinner prep. I’ll wash and cut potatoes, carrots, rutabaga and squash Wednesday. I’ll make the stuffing and three pies. Three pies! There are only four people eating. Dad is coming but Kristin is not. She has to work. I’m hoping she goes to Brandon’s for dinner in between.

Thursday is sit on the couch and watch the parade while the roasting turkey makes the house smell wonderful day.

Friday is decorating day! And with that, I’m off to bed.
